I doubted by eyes when I saw this, however it seems it’s legit. Warner Bros reportedly confirmed back in June that they had a deal for not only a live action Archie, of Archie comics fame, movie, but that it could be focused around a zombie apocalypse.
Names attached are Roy Lee, Jon Goldwater and Dan Lin who would produce, while Krisnan Menon and Jon Silk are attached as executive producers.
In June, Deadline.com reported that their sources spoke of a high school comedy screenplay that would be set in a present day Riverdale. Apparently if the zombie component is added, the it’s being considered that the scene could change to suburban New York.
Aguirre-Sacasa told Deadline’s Mike Fleming in March that the new comic line “combines two of my great passions: Archie comics and horror comics.” This series came out of the scribe’s conversations with Archie creator/publisher/editor John L. Goldwater, “asking questions like, ‘What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead?”
The kid in me that loved Archie comics and read them under the covers at night with a flashlight is conflicted screaming “YES! Gangster zombie crowning Jughead!” while the adult with a touch of the nostalgic in me is all, “WTF!?!” and “Why!?!”
The whole zombie aspect ties into the significantly darker theme of “Afterlife with Archie.” In this new series from the good folks at Archie Comics, Jughead actually is the root cause of a zombie outbreak when he triggers events by accidentally running over his dog. Jughead goes to, who else, Sabrina the Teen Witch who reincarnates Hot Dog. Things go sideways however and an alternate series is born.
It will be interesting to watch and Archie Comics releases it’s first ever non-all ages effort and even more interesting to see what happens with the now confirmed movie.
What do you think? Are you ready for an adult, Archie vs Zombies movie?
